History on Crosslake Community School

By: Haley Gibbs and Savannah Stone - 6th Grade Students

At this time in history, Crosslake was just starting to become a town.  Shops were being built, food stores were starting to be built, and the Crosslake School was starting up.

The first school was built by Ami Gould in 1889.  Ami was a man who wanted his son to go to school.  Harry, Ami’s son started school at the age of eight.  The first school teacher in the Crosslake area was Bertha Abbott.  This school was called Gordon School, named after Mrs. William Gordon, the woman who cleared a plot of the land where the school would be built.

The second school in the area was built in 1899.  This school was named Helensburg School after Helen Frost, daughter of George and Ann Frost, who were early pioneers.  The Helensburg School was located in the woods behind the house where George and Helen Wilson who lived and operated the Highway 3 Shop on Highway 3, just south of Highway 103.  The school burned down in 1918.

Then the children changed schools, to the Donavon School right cross the river, from where the Helensburg School was located.  The Donavon School was located where Yoerks’ Crosslake Auto is today.

As the community grew larger, people added another school district.  It was known as district 99.  They named the school “Moonlite Bay School” Now known as Moonlite Bay parking lot.

In the fall of 2000, Crosslake Community Charter School opened to student’s kindergarten through sixth grade.  When the new building was built in 2004, the grades went from kindergarten through eighth grade.
