My husband, Chad, and I have been married for 16 years. We have a six-year-old daughter, Sidney, and a four-year-old son, Tristan. Before becoming a stay-at-home mom, I thoroughly enjoyed my career as an English teacher and volleyball coach in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. My hobbies include reading, writing, cooking, camping and various sporting activities, especially running and volleyball. I am currently serving on various committees at our school, including the School Board. Though I love spending time at home with my family, active involvement with the school fulfills another of my needs. I simply love to be part of the school environment, and doing so as a parent has been especially meaningful.

I have a bachelor’s degree in English and a teaching certification from Augsburg College, and also a master’s degree in Education from St. Mary’s University. In addition to my experience and training in the field of education, I tend to be open-minded, optimistic, persistent and very committed to my obligations. As a board member, I look forward to opportunities to strengthen my skills by attending board-training workshops as they become available. I feel that the quality of my children’s education is extremely important and well worth my extra time and effort.

Vice Chair:
Lance Swanson: Educator - Term ends Dec 2011

I have taught students from 4-8th grades, but have settled in at the 4-5 level. I am considered kind of a workaholic, but I also like sports and watching comedies (both TV and movies). Traveling is also an interest of mine and I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to live in a village in Central America and a village in bush Alaska, as well as traveling to Europe for three weeks. The workload at this school has been offset by the incredible group of staff and students here.

Board Chair:
Harlan Young: Parent - Term ends Dec 2010

My wife Patricia and I live near Backus where we raised our 5 sons and 2 daughters, the youngest of which attends Crosslake Community School (CCS). I have been self-employed for 34 years and co-owner of I Like It Like That, Inc. since 1998. I enjoy applying management and technology skills to improve our school.

I find charter school governance to be very interesting and rewarding. One of my goals is to help strengthen parent and community relations. Together we can take advantage of tools that link parent and community involvement strategies to the goal of improved student achievement. It has been an outstanding experience to govern with our teachers at the board level.
